What Charlie Kirk Believed (and Where We’ve Gone Wrong)

Charlie Kirk carried a torch.

He believed in the Gospel and gave his life defending principles of our faith.

When he was shot and fell to the ground, it wasn’t just a microphone that he dropped. It was a torch that lit the world on fire with the Gospel.

Here are just a few stories coming out…

The martyrdom of Charlie Kirk brought thousands of people to church on Sunday.

Charlie Kirk’s Martyrdom Sparks Nationwide Church Revival: Thousands Flocking to Worship

I’ve read many such stories myself, and even better, people sharing that they have given their lives to Christ!

It’s our job now to fan those flames into fire because the reality is, we are at a turning point in this nation and even in this world where we need revival.

What Charlie Kirk Believed

Concerning Charlie’s faith and political beliefs, I have been truly astounded by some of the accusations and assertions from both the left and the right.

Some on the right claim he was converting to Catholicism, which is simply not true. One of his closest mentors was Frank Turek, a solid biblical apologist who thought of Charlie as one of his own sons (and had the horrifying experience of being in the car with him as they raced to the hospital to try to save him). I am friends with one of Frank’s closest friends, and I can tell you this claim is bogus. But you don’t have to believe me. There is plenty of evidence from Charlie’s own mouth on what exactly he believed regarding faith.

Some on the left accuse him of being racist, “homophobic,” and misogynistic. Again, this is not based on evidence, but on short clips, taken out of context. It is not hard to go find the complete videos and learn exactly what Charlie believed as far as these hot-button topics. I will try to add videos here as I am able, but do your own research.

Bible teacher Mike Winger made a helpful video that gives an overview of what Charlie believed and why.

Mike Winger explains what Charlie Kirk believed

(Side note: I didn’t feel comfortable putting the shooters name in this article, and I love how Winger articulated his stance on this, as well! Too often these types of people are looking for fame and notoriety. I refuse to help give that to him. Another interesting point: Some have said Kirk was not a martyr for the faith. Winger does a good job logically and biblically refuting this stance.)

Where We’ve Gone Wrong

We do not live in a Christian nation. While any true student of history can read source documents and know that we are a nation which was founded on Christian principles and ideals, the truth is that, while most citizens claim to be Christians, they are not true Christ followers.

Christian values, morals, and principles are our foundation and inform and influence much more than most of us even realize, but a spiritual weakness has left us vulnerable to attack, and it is an attack from within.

As our educational system has barreled full-force toward Marxism, we see new ideals embraced by the younger generations who don’t have the moorings of the Christian faith and have been skillfully and deceptively brainwashed by a godless education system. Here are some alarming statistics that show their vulnerability:

  • Only about 38-45% of Gen Z Americans currently identify as Christian.
  • By comparison, more than half of millennials (about 54%) and over 70% of Generation X identified as Christian at similar ages.
  • The share of religiously unaffiliated young adults (atheists, agnostics, or “nothing in particular”) is around 29% nationally, with higher rates among Gen Z than older adults.

It used to be in this country that people lived by the Golden rule: Treat others the way you would want to be treated. The Golden rule, based on Scripture (“And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them,” Luke 6:31), has been replaced by mob rule. Might makes right. My way or the highway.

Those who embrace democracy say, “I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” While those who embrace Marxism say, “I disagree with what you say, and I will kill you despite your right to say it.”

Chinese Marxist Mao Zedong said, “Political power grows out of a barrel of a gun,” and those who espouse Marxist ideologies see revolution and all out war as preferable to democratically bringing about change.

What hope do we have as a society when the ideas that win are not touted because of intrinsic merit, but because of fear and intimidation and totalitarian displays of power?

Conservatives are shocked by the behavior of many on the left. And it is quite shocking on the face of it. However, as the old saying goes, ideas have consequences. When you consider the constant stream of Marxist ideology that our modern public schools are teaching, how can we really be surprised by any of this?

Indeed, some on the left are saying that he had it coming to him. It is a calloused, cruel sentiment, but there is actually a small seed of truth that even Charlie knew. Ideas have consequences and the consequences of pumping Marxism into public education for so many years are that freedom of speech has become freedom of martyrdom.

Sure, you can stand up and state calmly and logically what you believe, but how free are you, really, if speaking comes with an assumed (almost presumed) and very real risk of assassination?

Sadly because of the state of our nation and the propaganda rampant in our schools and media, the evil that took out this God-fearing husband and father who simply dared to have an opinion based on Christian principles, the very principles our nation was founded upon, was practically inevitable.

If he was “asking for it” in any way, it was only because that’s what any good soldier does. They willingly enter the battle, knowing they may suffer mortal wounds, because they believe the cause is worth dying for.

And I know Charlie knew that the political climate we now live in was truly becoming dangerous beyond the obvious spiritual battle (link to video of his concerns). But what a tragedy for our nation that our fellow citizens have become the enemy within. This was the goal of the Marxists because they knew they couldn’t fight our nation from without.

So, yes. Ideas have consequences. Charlie Kirk stood boldly on the front lines as a warrior for truth and was ready to take those unjust, cruel consequences.

Are we?

How We Can Stand With Charlie Kirk

What does it mean to “stand with Charlie Kirk?” I believe it means to honor (not idolize) a great man of God by examining his teachings and following him “as he follows Christ.” (In 1 Cor. 11:1 Paul stated, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ”). We are to “give honor to whom honor is due” (Romans 13:7), and it is just basic common decency to give respect to those who have passed into eternity.

To stand with Charlie Kirk is to emulate his example and live in the same bold, courageous manner that he did. Like any of us, he was not perfect. But he accomplished more in his short 31 years than many will in a lifetime, and we can learn from his example.

This is how we can honor his legacy:

  1. Turn to Jesus, our only hope. Charlie knew that the real answer to our nation’s problems was not the government, but God. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” I’m so encouraged to see hundreds of people posting on social media about how they have returned to church after years of being away, or after even being an atheist! However, some people are recommending churches that don’t believe in the basic tenants of Christianity. Furthermore, it’s not enough just to go to church. Repent for your sins, put your complete faith and trust in Jesus, purchase a Bible and determine that you will read it daily, and ask the Holy Spirit to tell you what it all means. He will show you and send people to help you! Visit Living Waters to learn more about the Gospel that Charlie, and so many of us, believe.
  2. Get involved with politics. “The only thing it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.” Politics is messy and can be so divisive. But Christians are called to be salt and light, not to hide their candle “under a bushel.” Proverbs states,”When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.” If we don’t want wicked rulers, we need to step up and fill those positions! Even if you are not personally called into the political arena, you can pray for your politicians and donate to causes such as Turning Point USA.
  3. Teach your children about Jesus. More than anything else, our children need Jesus. We need to encourage them daily to read the Word and pray, talking to Jesus like a friend. We need to instill godly values and character into their lives! “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36). (There are some printables in the Lifeschooling Shop, such as this Kids Prayer Journal and this Put Off/Put On Prayer Journal that may help.)
  4. Teach your children to be strong, courageous, decisive visionaries. Charlie Kirk had a God-given vision and he wasn’t afraid to pursue the impossible. Even after his death, God is accomplishing his vision by growing TPUSA in incredible ways and spreading the Gospel throughout the world! Help your children discover their own gifts and callings, while helping them develop the godly character to accomplish great things. This character building collection of books was one of our favorites.
  5. Keep your children out of the indoctrination centers and homeschool. We have all witnessed first-hand what happens when a child, even at the age that Charlie’s killer was, is handed over to an institution that is often filled with anti-American Marxist teachers, and fellow students with no moral grounding. Even an 18-year-old is still impressionable, especially if they have been in the system all their lives without the firm grounding that doing life with one’s family 24/7 (homeschooling) gives. Read 10 Simple Steps to Start Homeschooling to learn how you can do it! You can also read a sample of my book, Lifeschooling: Learning to Think Outside the Curriculum Box to learn about a relaxed, gifts-focused approach to raise a world-changer like Charlie!
  6. Teach your children true American history. Find source documents and listen to true patriots who understand God’s hand in history and our nation’s founding. Beware of so-called Christian historians who warn against teaching Providential history. Here are some places to start:
  • Wallbuilders – This organization provides “education, training, and resources to equip people to know and defend the truth to protect our freedom.” They have videos, books, curriculum, conferences, and more. Check out their section where you can search original source documents.
  • Mystery of History – This is “an award-winning world history curriculum—written from a biblical worldview—to guide students through a meaningful, engaging, and historically accurate journey from ancient times to modern.” It’s very popular among Christian homeschoolers.
  • Notgrass History – Another wonderful Christian history curriculum that has textbooks for all ages.
  • BJU Press Heritage Studies – I grew up on BJU Press materials, and I think I turned out pretty well. 😉 There are many options here for studying American history from a Christian worldview.
  • America in God’s Providence – This textbook from Generations is huge and thorough! My youngest has enjoyed reading it daily.
  • Turning Point Education – Of course, we have to mention Turning Point Education, the organization Charlie started as part of his huge vision to turn the tides of Marxism in this country. For a limited time, they were offering all their curriculum for free with code “education”! Try the code to see if it still works.

Even as we stand with Charlie, it is ultimately not about a mortal man who died as a good, though imperfect, example, but about The Man, the “Man of Sorrows,” Jesus Christ our Savior, who came as fully God and fully man, lived a perfect life without sin, and suffered and died on the cross to take our place, save us from our sins, and reconcile us to God!

He was Charlie’s Savior. He’s my Savior. Is He yours?
