I want you to QUIT homeschooling.

Yes, I’m serious.

I’m Danielle Papageorgiou, a lifeschooling^TM veteran of 19 years, since I count birth as day 1 of our children’s education. I have three amazing kids who love God, love their family, and love lifeschooling^TM!

I didn’t always have the lifeschooling^TM mindset, though. While I’ve never fully embraced the “school-at-home” approach, like most homeschoolers, I’ve had to let go of many of my preconceived ideas of education over the years.

You see, when I first started, I did what most of us do.

I went to see an “expert” – a school teacher turned sales lady who told me I needed to purchase kindergarten curriculum.

And not just the “three Rs” of Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic, mind you. Oh no, we had to have everything, right down to kindergarten music curriculum.

Homeschool kindergarten music class, people. <insert eye roll>

I don’t think I need to tell you that it flopped. Big time. The first day, I took my little one through about five hours of work and even he, studious as he was, was fried by the end of the day.

But this is what the curriculum said to do.

I was following the Scope and Sequence. In fact, we even skipped over a few activities and lessons!

Fortunately, I knew enough to give up early and that was the end of our little school-at-home experiment (debacle).

I listened to my motherly intuition, wised up, and moved on.

And today that story makes me laugh. But it also makes me cry because I know there are so many other homeschooling moms out there that continue to press on with what they think is “the right way” to homeschool. (Perhaps you are one of them?)

You see, I’ve learned the secret to a peaceful, joyful, successful homeschool… and it’s not more curriculum or longer days.

I’ve learned that homeschooling doesn’t have to be hard.

I’ve learned that lifeschooling^TM is the key.

“Lifeschooling?” you say? “What’s that?”

Lifeschooling is the individualized process of discovering your child’s God-given gifts and talents, primarily through real life experiences that happen within the context of your family’s unique situations and missions.

My older two children are teens now, and I continue to be amazed at what the Lord has done through our lifeschooling^TM journey.

If you’ll permit me a little “mom-brag moment,” let me share just a few of their accomplishments (after all, they are the “product”)…

• Konur (19) is studying to get certifications in IT and is at a professional level already (his dad is in IT, so he knows!)
• He has a wide understanding of historical facts, particularly WW2 (that I did not teach him)
• He starred in and helped write the script for a professional grade movie his lifeschooling^TM friend produced (at age 14).
• He sometimes spends hours in Bible reading and prayer and has a relationship with the Lord that convicts me!
• Elleina (17) is an amazing artist (my dad and I are artists, so we know!)
• She started writing a book, No Return, at age 8 and published it at 13.
• She played a role in the award-winning movie Like Arrows, produced by the Kendrick brothers and Family Life, and has two other professional acting jobs in the works.
• Korban (9) constructs some pretty amazing Lego creations.
• He has learned many basic math concepts through play, without using curriculum.
• He shows promise in electronics and mechanical pursuits and we encourage these skills.

Truly, I don’t believe we would have this homeschooling story if it weren’t for lifeschooling^TM.
